The Village of Altamont is the only village in the Town of Guilderland, a little over a square mile of tree-lined streets and historic homes sitting right beneath the Helderberg Escarpment. Its small Main Street business district has shops, restaurants and services, John Boyd Thacher State Park is just up the hill, and every August the village hosts the Altamont Fair.

The settlement that became Altamont was first known as Knowersville. After the Albany and Susquehanna Railroad arrived in 1863, the center of town shifted toward the new depot, hotels and shops followed, and Albany families began building summer homes on the hillside above the village. Altamont incorporated as a village in 1890. Passenger service ended in 1963, and the historic train station is now home to the Altamont Free Library. A number of homes along Main Street are listed as historic buildings.
The Altamont Fair has been held at the village fairgrounds every year since 1893 and now serves Albany, Schenectady and Greene counties.
In the village itself you'll find 19th- and early 20th-century homes, many with porches and period details, on walkable streets near Main Street. Beyond the village line, Altamont addresses include mid-century homes, newer subdivisions, farmhouses and country properties with acreage and Helderberg views.
